I'm also a long time lurker that finally decided to create an account. It works so far very good on the breadboard, nice distortion, you can go from almost none to fairly crazy distortion. Here the schematic: thoughts, critique, suggestions etc very welcome!
I just copied the circuit from the article and added in- and output buffers (also recomended in the text) and a blend control. Notice how he also uses ridiculous high 10uf caps!!! (i tried 1uF here, but end up with phase shift at lower frequencies, i definitely don't want that due to the blend control) On the last page, fig.9 is what got my attention, so i build this circuit. Meanwhile i found this fantastic article from the well known valvewizard, it covers exactly this, seems very competent: So i was looking for other possiibilities for tubes running at 12 volts. Right, the schematic i posted is almost the same as the "savety valve" except for the positive grid bias, way lower anode resistors, and the 10uF caps.īut am more looking for a "tube warmer" type overdrive with more control in less distorted territory. I got very heavy distortion, and very harsh sounding. Jea exactly, thats what i started out with, but i was not quite satisfied with it. That does look an awful lot like the SafetyValve its of course a work in progress and i will share the results here (if i come to a satisfying result)īUT NOW: any hints, thoughts, what else one could try, other tubes? make things voltage controllable? what else to try? what other values? Maybe a power switch to relax the power supply when the module is not in use (even neccesary?) A splitter at the input to have a Dry/Wet knob at the end (thats why i try to avoid aformentioned phase shifts) made with some opamps. Variable Bias resistor on the first stage (or would it make sense to have that on the second stage too) NOW: what i try to achieve: A nice tube distortion (just because i think tubes are hot) with following features:

Higher resistance result in wavefolding (i guess) but much quiter output.Ĭurrent draw: is quite big at -12V with 135mA (blame the heater filaments) but only 0.9mA on +12 (with full gain, loudest setting) gets lower with less gain and higher cathode resistor.
